How I Met My Mother
There’s this nursing student studying at Sacred Heart College. She’s kind, humble, and resourceful. Her friends were fantastic; they always helped her if there was a certain medical process she couldn’t understand and she appreciates that, for she knew she couldn’t do it alone. She eats Pancit Canton for dinner -but she didn’t mind it at all. She had a mindset that her four years of struggle would all be worth it. And soon she could buy all the food she wanted. Her four years has passed and it was now her turn to take the nursing board exam. During their review most of her classmates would take breaks to calm them and give themselves little treats. They would usually buy those delicious doughnuts with pretty coatings on top and hamburgers.
They always invited her to come with them but she also always turned them down. It was because she didn’t have any money to spend and also because she doesn’t have the luxury to take breaks during review. Instead of joining them she’d rather hear mass at church, 3 times a day for everyday during her review.
The big day had arrived. It was her examination day and she was prepared. The exam would be held for 3 days, she knew that. But what she didn’t know was that they would not be allowed to go outside the gates for 3 days as well. She panicked. She doesn’t have the money to buy food from the Cafeteria. She only had enough for her Pancit Canton. It took her all her will and courage to finally make a phone call home asking them to send her money. This decision was too much for her for it was not in her nature to ask. For she was always contented with what she received she couldn’t ask for more. But this time she had no choice.
Her sister came to her rescue and gave her Php 500.00 –she never forgot that. 3 months after finishing the exam she immediately went looking for a job. She bought a printed resume on a sidewalk worth 2 pesos and went to hospitals to look for a job vacancy. During an interview, the interviewer asked her if she had passed the board exam. She said yes. The results weren’t out yet but she was sure she passed the exam. She studied. She prayed. She worked hard. She was sure she passed the bored exam. And she was right. She did pass her board exam.
Kids, this was my Mom 22 years ago. She is a legend. I always tell her that if there were a twist of faith and we ended up on the same age, school, course, and class. That we wouldn’t be friends. I don’t like admitting what I lack, I don’t like not being to afford a doughnut and not complain about it. I can’t wear the same pair of shoes for fours years of college. And I don’t have the guts to get a job before the result came out. (Though given that I’m not a nursing student.) Mom and I are two different people. You have no idea how many time I’ve asked her if she was really my biological mother and if I was adopted. She would always smile at me and say that I’m the fruit of her womb carefully made inside her tummy for 9 months.
LONG STORY SHORT, I LOVE YOU MOM.
